Quick Energy Pick Me Ups!
If you’re pregnant or have young kids then you’re probably tired (if you’re not, please tell us the secret!), so we’ve trawled the web for the best and simplest ways to boost your energy without having to fork out for a triple shot espresso.
1. Have a piece of chocolate
Our favourite of all the quick pick-me-ups, chocolate gives us a light endorphin buzz as well as a slight caffeine boost. Dark (85%) is better for you and has more caffeine and fewer calories than milk chocolate.
2. “Ha” Breath
1. Check that no one is watching/listening
2. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and knees bent
3. Place your hand on your lower abdomen and inhale through the mouth (expanding the belly)
4. Exhale quickly through the mouth making a “Ha” sound
5. Repeat rapidly for 2 minutes
3. Grab the potato masher and start singing
Don’t be embarrassed! Whether you’re alone or with the kids, pick a song you know the words to and bust out your best moves. The energy boosting effect comes from shaking your groove thing and singing out loud, so best not to sing Les Mis songs unless you want to end up slumped and weeping in the corner.
4. Quick Massage
Convince your partner to give you a 10-minute shoulder, neck and head massage (remember to play the pregnancy/gave birth card, if you can). They don’t need to be an expert – just tell them to apply a bit of pressure and not to expect it to lead to something more! Finish by brushing hands gently over the head and shoulders three times.
5. Peppermint Essential Oil
To experience a quick burst of energy put two drops of Peppermint Essential Oil on your tongue (don’t touch the bottle to your tongue) and let it mix with your saliva. Your brain will perk up instantly and your grandpa breath will disappear!
9. Wear brighter colours
If you wear bright, happy colours, people (especially kids) are more likely to respond to you in a bright, happy mood, boosting your own mood and energy levels.
10. Have a cuppa
A recent study by researchers at University College London found that drinking 4-6 cups of tea a day reduces stress hormone levels in the body. This may indicate that drinking black tea speeds up our recovery from the daily stresses in life – especially if it’s accompanied with quiet kids and a chance to put your feet up.
11. Get on your toes
Roll up and down on your toes. This stimulates your circulatory system, which will deliver much-needed oxygen and fuel (glucose) throughout your body. You’ll be more energized and sharper and you can do it right now (why not do some kegels while you’re at it!).
12. Laugh. A lot.
Even if you just throw your hands up and laugh out of sheer exhaustion, it really is the best medicine. Google some funny cats or phone up a friend that makes you chuckle, because laughter really is the happiest way to boost your energy.
