The Benefits of Baby Reflexology
By Tracey Collinson, B.A., CR (Certified Reflexologist)
Touch is the first sense to develop in the womb and as a result babies thrive if they are touched with love and care. Reflexology is a wonderful therapy to provide for your baby. It is convenient, can be used anywhere at anytime and can help your baby with a multitude of issues such as, colic, constipation, teething, colds & stuffiness, sleeplessness, fussiness and simply rest and relaxation. Parents have the tool of reflexology right at their own fingertips and can use it as often as they like to calm and help their baby to relax.
Since babies have such tiny feet providing them comfort with reflexology is really quite simple.
1. Basically if you work the entire surface of the baby’s foot from the heel up to the tops of the toes, you are providing your little one with a mini-reflexology treatment. Their feet are delicate and you need only to apply gentle pressure.
2. The reflex points on a baby’s feet are much closer together than on an adults. Start by supporting the right foot with your left hand and using your right hand place your thumb or index finger at the bottom of the heel area in line with the little baby toe. Using a forward creeping movement work up to the top of the baby toe. Continue using the same method from the heel up to the top of each toe finally ending at the big toe. You can repeat these steps 2 or 3 times if your baby will let you. Repeat on the left foot.
3. You have just worked the entire surface of your baby’s feet and have now established a wonderful bonding experience between you and your baby.
